3rd Party Insurance Requirements

Third Pary Facility Users, Liability Insurance Requirements - Overview

Per University Administrative Policy 5250, all third-party (non-University) individuals and organizations using University of New Mexico facilities are required to carry general liability insurance. This requirement applies to all events and activities held at University-owned facilities and helps protect tuition and taxpayer-funded resources from the negligent acts of third parties. Liability insurance is a standard business practice that provides financial protection in the event of injuries or property damage.

Insurance Requirements

Third-party facility users must carry general liability insurance with a minimum limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence and the policy must name the Regents of the University of New Mexico as an additional insured. Proof of insurance must be submitted to UNM prior to the event. You can view an example general liability certificate of insurance here.  Third parties that do not already carry a general liability policy may obtain coverage through the Risk Services Department’s TULIP Program to satisfy this requirement.

Third Pary Users Liability Insurance Requirements - What is TULIP?

The TULIP program covers activities and events held by tenant users at University-owned premises. The TULIP policy applies to Bodily Injury or Property Damage arising out of the use of University premises by the declared tenant user. A tenant user is defined as a third party who has temporary possession of the location as described in the application.

What Will it Cost?

Premium costs are determined based on the nature of the event, the anticipated number of participants, and the number of days. While it is impossible to quote rates without detailed information about the event, we can say that premiums for this program usually are lower than any similar policy you could buy on the open market for your event.

What Events Must Have Coverage?

Any activity or event sponsored by third party tenant users at any University-owned premises.
