Automobile Insurance

If you are involved in an accident in a University owned or rented vehicle, please follow these instructions:

1.  Call UNMPD (505) 277-2241 if you are on campus, or call APD (505) 242-2677 if you are off campus, or call 911 if appropriate.  A police report will need to be filed.

2. Collect the insurance information for the other involved party.  We recommend taking a photo of their insurance card.

3.  While on scene, do not admit fault for the accident.

3. Take photos of the accident scene and damages associated with the accident, if safe to do so.

4. Report the incident by clicking HERE. Because we have strict timeframes for reporting losses to the carrier, it is critical that the incident is reported immediately.  You do not need to wait for any additional claim documentation that may be needed such as the police report or repair estimates to report the loss.  Always report any incidents or accidents immediately and no later than 3 business days after the incident.

Insurance for Rented Vehicles

Purchasing excess physical damage and liability coverage for rental vehicles—from vendors outside of the Enterprise corporate rate—is allowable and recommended when the department’s budget permits. Although the University's standard insurance coverage applies to rental vehicles, the claims process, especially in foreign countries, can be complex and difficult to navigate. These challenges are best mitigated by purchasing the available rental insurance, especially when abroad.

Auto Damage/Accidents outside of New Mexico

The University expects all drivers of university owned or rented vehicles to report accidental damage, including accidents involving vehicles while abroad. The reporting process should follow the same steps used for domestic accidents involving University-owned vehicles, to the extent possible. Drivers should contact local authorities (e.g., police) to obtain a formal report, take photos of the scene and damage, and notify Risk Services immediately, but no later than 3 business days after the incident.
