Q: I was injured while working, where do I go to seek medical treatment?

A: If you are injured between Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM and you live and work within Bernalillo County, please visit Employee Occupational Health Services (EOHS). If you are injured outside of this time period, please seek medical care at the University Hospital. Identify yourself as a University employee with a work-related injury and ask for a doctor from the Family Practice Division of the School of Medicine. Any follow-up treatment must be with EOHS and not a regular University Hospital physician. If you are outside of Bernalillo County, such as branch campus employees, please visit an urgent care or clinical provider of your choice. *If your injury is severe, life-threatening, or an emergency, please go to the nearest ER or call 911. 

Q: Do I have to seek medical treatment?

A: No, you do not have to seek medical treatment. You can report injuries here, even if you do not plan to seek medical treatment.


Q: When should I notify Risk Services about damage to University property?

A: Immediately notify Risk Services about any damages, even if you think they may be under our deductible. Our insurance provider has a strict 30-day reporting deadline. Damages reported more than 30 days after the occurrence will be denied.

Q: What is the property damage deductible?

A: The property claim deductible is $5,000.00 for damages caused by vandalism or for stolen property. There is a $2,500.00 deductible for damages caused by all other perils including flood, fire, weather, etc. The department sustaining the loss is responsible for the deductible.

Q: I was in an auto accident in a UNM vehicle. What should I do after I notify UNM or ABQ police? 

A: Please follow the instructions below:
1. While on-scene, do not admit responsibility for the accident.
2. Take photos of the accident scene and damages associated with the accident, if safe to do so. 
3. Refer to the auto insurance and claims process documents located in the glovebox.
4. There is a strict 30-day reporting deadline. Report the accident here. Follow up documentation should be sent to: claims@unm.edu. * Follow up documents is not required to file claim. 

Follow up Documents:
- Police Report
- Clear color photos (of damage as well as photos of the entire vehicle at a distance) 
- Two repair estimates -Towing charges (if applicable)
- Defensive Driving Certificate (DDC) Automobile accidents must also be reported to the UNM Police Department. 

Q: Our UNM vehicle was stolen. What should we do?

A: Immediately report the theft to the UNM Police Department then notify Risk Services by completing the auto loss notice form here.

Q: Are towing charges reimbursable?

A: Yes, if resulting from a covered auto loss, such as an accident, submit the towing receipts to UNM Risk Services. 

Q: Who pays the auto repair shop for damages covered through a claim?

A: Generally speaking, the department should pay the shop for repairs due to an accident. If there are issues with funding or if the total cost of the claim exceeds $5,000 then it is possible for our insurance to pay the shop directly less our deductible. Please consult with your assigned UNM Risk Services claims specialist.

Q: What is group accident insurance?

A: Group Accident insurance provides limited medical coverage for bodily injury claims that may occur while UNM enrolled students participate in a sponsored activity, such as a field trip. See here for signup. 

Q: What about Bodily Injury to Employees, Students or Guests?

A: If an employee is injured on the job, follow the instructions provided to submit a Workers Compensation claim. For injuries to students, guests, and visitors that you witness or that are reported to you, please complete this notice.UNM Risk Services and UNM Environmental Health & Safety will be notified and respond as needed. In the meantime, do not accept liability or responsibility for an injury to others while they are on UNM property. The incident must be investigated. 

Q: Do I need to buy extra auto insurance when renting a vehicle for UNM business?

A: UNM Risk Services recommends booking all rental vehicles via travel.unm.edu, if you book with Enterprise or National the cost of additional insurance to pay for collision and comprehensive damages is included in the rate. For other rental car agencies, consult with your department management about purchasing the additional insurance coverage's that are available. * UNM auto insurance extends to employee use of rental vehicles for business purposes. The standard deductibles will apply in case of a loss if no additional insurance is purchased through the rental agency

Q: Can I drive my department's vehicle?

A: Any person operating a UNM vehicle must meet the requirements as outlined in University Administrative Policy 7780, which includes, taking the defensive driving course, DDC. Certificates are valid for 4 years and signup is arranged by UNM Risk Services, please click here for more information. Your driving record will also be reviewed to determine eligibility to drive a UNM vehicle. 

Q: Can I drive my own car on UNM-related business?

A: UNM Risk Services highly discourages use of personal vehicles to conduct University business. However, if you choose to drive your own vehicle to conduct University business, please adhere to the following: • Your supervisor should be aware that you are operating your own vehicle to conduct University business • Your vehicle should be legally insured and in good condition. Your personal auto insurance policy will be primary in case of an accident. In the event of a serious accident, the auto liability insurance that UNM maintains may be available if your own insurance policy is not sufficient to pay all claims. 

Q: My personal vehicle was damaged while parked on campus, who do I contact at UNM for help?

A: Please reference the verbiage on the backside on your UNM parking pass. “UNM is not responsible for theft, vandalism, or loss of contents of vehicles occupying its lots.” Damages should be reported to UNMPD and you must file a claim with your personal auto insurance carrier.
