Guidelines for Renovation & Remodel Projects
Material Selection:
- Use product consensus standards.
- Obtain Material Safety and Data Sheets (MSDS)/ Manufacturer certifications.
- Require field approval for product substitutions
- Select carpet, cushion and adhesive labeled for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions under the Carpet Research Institute Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) testing program. Specify low VOC adhesives and coatings to minimize IAQ contamination. Require the manufacturer to provide emissions information on all materials used.
- Select carpet that is constructed to prevent liquid penetration of the backing layers where moisture can result in mold growth.
- Select carpet that can be easily removed without the use of toxic chemicals.
- If carpet odor is a concern, air out carpeting in a clean dry warehouse before delivery to the building where the carpet is to be installed.
- Specify least toxic carpet adhesive system compatible with the selected carpet product. Use smallest amount of adhesive required.
- Install carpet during renovations only when the building is not in use.
- Follow recommendations of the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) for installation.
- Do not install carpeting in areas where it can become wet, such as water fountains and sinks.
- Air out the carpet after installation for a minimum of 72 hours (preferably using 100% outside air).
- Follow the carpet manufacturer's maintenance recommendations to protect carpet warranties.
- Clean all spills immediately and thoroughly. Extract the moisture and dry within 24 to 48 hours.
